As of the end of the 2009 foaling season, Merlin
produced 100% colored foals. Until he has had 15 foals from sorrel, bay, and
black mares, we can't claim with certainty that he is homozygous for dun
factor. But at this time, the odds are very much in favor that he is!
For example (using just his 2007 foal colors), the odds of him producing all dun-factored foals from the 6 plain-colored mares he has foals from would be 1.56% if he was not homozygous (15 in 1000). The odds of a non-homozygous stallion producing all color from 6 plain-colored mares and 5 colored mares, which is his record so far, are about 0.371% (3 in 1000). With odds like these, it's overwhelmingly likely that he is homozygous for dun factor!
