Sooty Cowboy

• March, 2020:  We are offering Sooty FREE LEASE to someone with kids that could use a small riding horse

• We might possibly work out a lease to a breeder that would flush embryos from her (Sooty is NOT a good candidate to be a broodmare without help in the last month: loses colostrum).

• We will be picky about her facilities, as this is a lease and not a sale.
  Honestly, we may not let her go if her pasture will be fenced with barbed wire. Variables can affect this, but it's something we are concerned about.
  Obviously, we don't want her to be hurt at all. In addition, as a free lease horse, we don't want her to get hurt in barbed wire, only to have her returned to us to pay all the bills for. 

• She is in winter pasture shape right now! She has a big hay belly from having hay in front of her 24/7 all winter. The above pictures were obviously summer and in shape.

More About Sooty

• We have been blessed with a few wonderful foals from Sooty, but she is done with her breedmare career and we have returned her to our riding group. Both of our children showed Sooty in 4-H, and we have used her as a trail horse.

• Sooty's breeder was the late and legendary Sally Brown of Fox Meadow Farm (part-owner of Hollywood Jac 86 and recipient of the first ever NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement award).

• Sooty is a small mare (13.2 to 14.1 hh...I really need to actually measure her, but she's definitely not tall), as are many of the foundation reining horses. What she lacks in size, she more than makes up for in pedigree and disposition!

• She has Hollywood Jac 86 and Topsail Cody bloodlines, which is a cross you're probably familiar with. Check out these horses that have similar breeding:  Whizard Jac, the 1996 Open NRHA Futurity Champion. Topgun Whiz, 1998 NRHA Futurity Limited Open Champion and the 1999 Open NRHA Derby Champion. Who Whiz It. Don Quintana. Jumping Jack Whiz.

• Notes from her previous owner:  She was started at UW-RF in 2002. She was trained for an additional 90 days by Tracy Beldenwald, the girl who started her. She went to a cattle working clinic in 2006 and has no fear of cattle. Sooty has been out on the trails and ties on a picket line overnight. Just about anyone could ride her. She has been ridden bareback with a halter and lead rope. She would need some time under saddle to leg up and refresh her training to show. Loads into trailer, can be stalled or pastured. She sidepasses, does flying lead changes walks, trots, lopes and spins.

• Both of our children showed Sooty in 4-H, and she was sure a trooper. She remembered everything from training and never tried any tricks for her novice rider despite not having been ridden in 4 years when our older daughter asked if Sooty could be her 4-H horse. Sooty's only vices we have seen while riding are reluctance to enter the arena when she's the only horse going through the gate (such as in speed events), and on the trail, she does not want to be left behind by the group. In the pasture, she will sometimes walk/trot away from us for a few minutes before heaving a great sigh, stopping, and letting us catch her. After being a riding horse for us, we decided to try to get another foal from her, and she returned to the broodmare band.
